Weekend Trips

Pantai Sawarna

From Central Jakarta (Kuningan) to Pantai Sawarna = 5 to 7hrs hours in normal traffic conditions.

Pantai Sawarna Is at the far end of Sukabumi, it’s literally the total opposite side of the map from Ancol. The beaches here are absolutely amazing especially if you’re a surfer, you’re going to love it.

You can find areas to camp on the beach if you wish but there’s also plenty of cheap hotels that are very nice to stay in so don’t worry about not finding somewhere.

One thing I will say AND PLEASE TAKE NOTE…. Is that what google or anyone in the area doesn’t tell you, is that the entire area is called Pantai Sawarna. Within Pantai Sawarna is about 100km’s of beaches which are all known as Pantai Sawarna, but then have their own name on top of that for example; Pantai Sawarna Legon Pari, Pantai Sawarna Sepang.

Now here’s another thing you MUST KNOW because locals won’t think to tell you this and it’s a huge drama if you get it wrong! There are beaches here with the same name but the words are simply the other way around and here’s what I mean.

There’s a beach called Legon Pari Pantai that all the surfers go to. There’s also an amazing secluded beach for camping that I wanted to go to which is called Pantai Legon Pari. The difference in wording is Legon pari pantai, and Pantai Legon Pari. These are two totally different beaches and they’re 30km apart so whatever you do, DO NOT GET CAUGHT OUT BY THAT. If you ask a local, they won’t tell you that there’s two of them and they’ll send you to the wrong beach, so don’t make that mistake.

From Central Jakarta (Kuningan) to Pantai Sawarna = 5 to 7hrs hours in normal traffic conditions.

You can take your car here no problem at all as it’s all main road the whole way. You can also take a minibus if there’s a group of you. If you go to THEE Pantai Sawarna where all the tourists go, you can park up and then take an ojek down to the beach. It’s a pretty long walk from the car park area to the actual beach and there’s always ojeks offering a ride for a small fee of 20k or something.

If you go to the same one as me to vamp on the beach away from everyone, then that’s called Pantai Sawarna Sepang. You’ll need to park up at the 7-11 shop, leave your car there, and get some of the locals to give you a ride on an ojek. This is quite a fair distance so it’s usually around 50-100k for there and back.

Once you get to the beach you need to walk for about 4k’s to get to the actual beach. The route is through a dirt track with a couple of little twists and turns so try to get one of the locals to help you get there so you don’t get lost. Not the easiest place to find but once you get there you’ll like it, very peaceful and plenty of wild coconuts for you to enjoy.

Difficulty level 5 - This is quite a cheeky little trek and not the easiest place in the world to find but if you finally make it there, it’s well worth it. There isn’t really anything to do on the beach apart from relax and enjoy how beautiful and quiet it is. Be sure to take a powerbank to charge your phone and bring a pack of cards to keep occupied. The beach is huge so you can go and explore if you like. The sea is very strong though so not really a place you can swim as the waves are HUGE! Great if you’re a surfer.

You can do this on your own as there aren’t many guides to be honest but please ask locals how to get there to keep you right as you could get lost id you take the wrong path.

Phone Signal:- Yes

It’ll take you anywhere from 30 mins to an hour to get there from when you drop the car off at the 7-11 shop. There’s about a 4km walk from where the ojek guys will drop you until you get to the beach.

To camp at Pantai Sawarna Sepang you’ll need;
  • Trekking backpack
  • Minimum 6 liters of water (MINIMUM)
  • Enough food and rations for your stay
  • Cooker + Gas
  • Spork
  • Tent / Hammock and Flysheet (Waterproof)
  • Ankle support boots / spare set of laces
  • Sleeping bag as it gets cold at night but not freezing
  • Spare socks and foot powder
  • Clothes for Hot and Cold weather as it gets hot during the day and Cold at night. Remember to always keep one pair of clothes in your bag dry AT ALL TIMES so that you’ll always have dry clothes to sleep in. Put your wet clothes back on in the morning and pack your dry clothes away (Wet + Dry Drills)
  • Shorts and T-shirt to relax
  • Sandals / Flip Flops
  • Headlamp / Torch + spare batteries
  • Sunscreen / Sunglasses / Hat
  • Surfboard if you have one

There’s no fees to camp on Pantai Sawarna Sepang but you will need to pay the ojek guys to take you to the closest possible point before you walk the rest. Trust me, you can’t get there any other way, we tried and it just wasn’t possible.

It’s open all year round as it’s a beach but of course be aware in the rainy season the weather can get pretty wild with storms and there’s an area with loads of banana plants that does have king Cobras in it so don’t play around the banana plant area.

Summary

Pretty amazing place to see but not much to do once you’re there. If you just want to go an adventure with your girlfriend and chill out for a couple of days it’s ideal. There isn’t any way for you to get eater easily though once you’re there so make sure you take plenty of it with you to the beach.
