Weekend Trips

Malasari village

Malasari village camping ground NOT the research area camping ground
From Central Jakarta (Kuningan) to Malasari village Camp Site = 3hrs hours in normal traffic conditions.

This is a great camping site and not one that many people use so if you go there, you’ll probably have it all to yourself. The camping area is a 1.5km walk from where you’ll park the car. You then walk through the paddy fields and up a small hill where you'll come to a flat camping area at the top of the hill.

From the camping area you can walk down to the river in less than 30 seconds. You can swim here and explore this amazing area, you can’t really get lost but of course I’d highly recommend you take a guide who knows the local people.

This will make it easier for you to park your car and also he will sort out payment for camping in that area. You’ll find the fee details below along with Yusuf’s contact number if you’d like to use him as a guide. I use Yusuf everytime I go to these new locations and he’s great, very trustworthy, reliable, not afraid to help you with your kit and he knows everybody so you never get any problems.

From Central Jakarta (Kuningan) to Malasari village Camp Site = 3hrs hours in normal traffic conditions.

You can absolutely take your car here even if it’s not a 4x4 because this isn’t the research centre camping ground, you stop 18km’s short of that so the road is normal. In saying that the road itself does have potholes etc so take your time and don’t wreck your car.

You can park your car in the village and one of the locals will make sure it’s safe, just drop him some cash to say thanks before you go home. I gave him 100k as a rough guide. You do pay to camp here but it’s only around 20k ish, per person.

Difficulty level 3 - I’ve given this a 3 because there is a cheeky hill to get to your campsite, it’s not very big but it is quite steep and if you’re carrying a lot of kit you’ll be knackered haha. Apart from that the rest is easy. You can refill your water from various sources beside your camping area and i would recommend you boil it first or you take water purifying tablets with you.

You can do it solo I guess but to be honest I’d recommend a guide. You’re going to have to ask someone to watch your car while your camping, ask permission to enter and pay. It really helps me to have Yusuf as he knows the whole village so he sorts everything out effortlessly.

Phone Signal:- Yes but only with certain sims, no signal with TelKomsel

From where you’ll park the car it’s about a 1.5km walk through paddy fields and up a small mountain. It’ll take you around 20 minutes to get from the car to the campsite.

To explore Malsari village camping area you’ll need;
  • Trekking backpack minimum 60 liter
  • Minimum 4 liters of water
  • Enough food and rations for your stay
  • Cooker + Gas
  • Spork
  • Tent / Hammock and Flysheet (Waterproof)
  • Ankle support boots / spare set of laces
  • Sleeping bag as it gets cold at night but not freezing
  • Spare socks and foot powder
  • Sandals/flip flops for night time
  • Clothes for Hot and Cold weather as it gets hot during the day and cold at night. Remember to always keep one pair of clothes in your bag dry AT ALL TIMES so that you’ll always have dry clothes to sleep in. Put your wet clothes back on in the morning and pack your dry clothes away (Wet + Dry Drills)
  • Headlamp / Torch + spare batteries
  • Sunscreen / Sunglasses / Hat / Gloves (as its all jungle, very easy to cut your hands to pieces)
  • Means to make fire at night time

I give the guy 100k to park the car outside his house and watch it for me for 3 days. Then I paid around 25k per night to camp there per person. This can change of course but this is a rough idea.

This area is prone to landslides and there was one literally 10 meters away from me the last time I went. The rivers were raging compared to when I went in the dry season and I was lucky, if I had chosen to camp on the opposite side of the river I wouldn’t be here right now. That being said, don’t be put off by that and go in the dry season when it’s much safer and the rivers are much calmer for you to swim in.

Please be very careful when you go over the look down from the top of the waterfall as it’s very slippery which can be dangerous.

Summary

Fantastic place, can’t recommend it enough and definitely somewhere you should try out while you’re here in Indonesia.

By all means give Yusuf a call who I can highly recommend as a guide.
